Project brief
To equip 600 identified villages in Madagascar with a portable and easy to use system (Watalys) to produce chlorine concentrated solution, which is used to purify polluted water into drinking water.
These 600 sites, where water is heavily polluted, have been selected in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Madagascar.
Project details
The Association TIM-SFV has launched “Drink Water for All” program in 2003, proposing the "Sodis" solar disinfection system. In 2006 a first test with another technique, the "Watalys system" is launched.
The Watalys system is targeting communities of about 6000 people, while SODIS addresses families directly.
The strategy involves the equipment of decentralised health centres in rural areas. Patients go directly through them and as their climate of trust favour its introduction.
TIM-SVF Partners in the region Alaotra Mangoro, Fandrosoana, with other NGOs and the State officials responsible for public health engineering. They all have worked together to conduct awareness.
UNICEF has been working since early 2009 in the region for the establishment of a program of hygiene and sanitation facilities and the creation of a "WASH" committee.
The Drinking Water Project, which complements the work of UNICEF, has found its natural place.
About Watalys Visit also www.bulane.com
Watalys is a point of use generation of sodium hypochlorite. It is a lightweight portable device (13.5 cm - 176 grams) designed for 12V field operations.
Sodium hypochlorite is the solution provided by Watalys acting as a powerful disinfectant used for water potabilization and disinfection.
One Watalys device provides safe water for 100 to 6,000 people everyday for several years.

Results obtained and/or expected
- In 2006, the TIM-SFV did a pilot project in 3 villages.
- In 2008, the TIM-SFV started a larger project for 15 villages.
- In 2009, the TIM-SFV launched action on a larger scale to work on 50 priority villages. The association was able to equip 18 villages of the Alaotra Mangoro region.
- In 2010, TIM SFV will equip the next 15 villages, more if funding is available.
The political crisis has aggravated the health situation (lack of drugs). On the other hand, the region is regularly victim of hurricanes. The number of cases of diseases related to water is increasing. The concentrate has become crucial to the health centers that were left even more isolated from the world.
The evaluation and recommendations are mainly focused on changing public attitudes. Indeed, the use of the health center as the solution provider resulted in that some families treat the disinfection of water like a temporary care (during illness).
In all centers, a strategy to perpetuate is in place.
Water committee
The advocacy and behavior change is the most important part of the project. It has been agreed with partners to favor the creation of water committees in every village. These committees will be led by local associations that already exist (women's association in most cases) and are in charge of sensibilisation.
