Project brief
The RWSN Forum, held in Kampala, Uganda in November 2011 will bring together 300 – 400 participants from all over the world. The forum is unique in that it explicitly draws together small private enterprises, political leaders from a local level, local and central government administrators, extension workers, academic institutions and donors to exchange their hands on experiences regarding the realities of improving rural water supplies around the globe.
Project details
The Forum, entitled Rural Water Supply in the 21st Century: Myths of the Past, Visions for the Future will be a three day event plus a one day field trip. It will consider: lessons learned and good practices; new approaches in Rural Water Supplies (e.g. microfinance, output-based aid, small business development, post construction support; emerging issues and ensuring drinking water security, including consideration of agricultural demands and water resources management. Specifically designed sessions will include presentation of peer reviewed papers and case studies (from Asia, Africa and Latin America), small group discussions, ideas fair (open to all participants), poster presentations, films, practical demonstrations, an exhibition and field visits.
RWSN wants to ensure that committed professionals, practitioners, private enterprises and local leaders are able to attend the forum. Women and men with a wide range of perspectives and working in different contexts will enable vibrant discussion and knowledge-sharing.
Thus RWSN seeks financial support for participant sponsorship, the publication and translation of case studies, documentary film, overall coordination and management of the event and the venue. .

The total budget require for the RWSN Forum is CHF 500,000
Implementing Organisations
The overall coordination and management of the RWSN Forum is being undertaken by Skat Foundation. The Forum will be hosted by the Ministry of Water and Environment in Kampala, Uganda. The main partners are UNICEF, the Water and Sanitation Programme (WSP) of the World Bank, WaterAid, IRC and the African Development Bank.
Results expected
It is expected that the forum will enable the following results to be realised:
- Participants have a much wider understanding of different ways of improving access to safe water in rural areas and are better aware of the environmental challenges that will need to be faced in the future.
- New informal networks are established between potential collaborators.
- Participants who operate at very different levels are able to document and analyse their experiences and present these to others for feedback.
- Participants are inspired by learning from the excellent national rural water supply programme in Uganda.
- Strategic guidance for the RWSN with respect to the key issues it should focus on in the coming years as well as new partnerships for knowledge exchange within the rural water supply community
